This is regarding my friend who passed away last year. She developed pneumonia due to emphysema. She recovered from it and after a couple of months was sent home. She passed away within hours after reaching home. No autopsy was done and cause of death was mentioned COPD. I received her detailed medical records and I wish to determine how bad her lungs were to help me understand the actual cause of death. She also had DVT and I keep thinking if it was respiratory failure (possible only if her lungs were bad enough) or PE, as she was actually admitted for PE. Her last medical records were based on CT scan which mention "Severe centrilobular emphysema throughout both lungs". Along with that it also mentioned "Airways: Clear without thickening or obstruction". How can airways be clear despite of severe emphysema? What was the actual condition of her lungs? If anyone wishes to help more, I can share entire reports for them to see and determine. Thanks!
