I was told I had mild emphysema back in 2004.
Over time I noticed I adjoined situations that made me short of breath.
In February I ended up catching pneumonia but recovered. In June my breathing got a bit worse again, and I learned my left lung collapsed. (Did not happen from pneumonia but after recovery).
But up until this fall I was walking daily, no periods of shortness of breath that scared me or anything. August I still got in 10,000 steps. In October I hit a wall. No infection or fungus or anything to cause exacerbation. But I went to ER and was admitted for 4 days and sent home told I now need oxygen 24/7. Total surprise and not a good one.
A week later I spoke with primary doctor who said I really needed to go back to hospital. Just going to the bathroom on 3 liters tanked my levels into the 70’s. Scary! I’m home again and unable to qualify for truly lightweight machine. Tanks are required already. Told I need like 5 when walking; especially if I carry something.
Question: At this rate of downfall, where any exertions causes me to have serious SOB, is starting pulmonary rehab in a month (soonest appt) even worth it? I can sit at my desk and type this, and even work for the moment. Too young to retire or for Medicare. What’s your best advice for sudden serious situation like mine? Thank
