Hello everyone- this is my first post and it’s nice to meet you all. Forgive me such a long post…
I was wondering if anyone else is in a similar position as I keep getting different takes on my spirometry results from resp professionals. My latest post-bronchodilator results are posted here-
I’m a lifelong asthmatic with asthma that’s now very well controlled to the degree I have no symptoms 99% of the time, but when I was a child I had many bouts in hospital with it or pneumonia and always had several chest infections a year until my 30s. These days I only have infections requiring oral steroids every couple of years.
I have a 14 pack-year smoking history and quit 6 years ago after being diagnosed with mild COPD at my first ever spirometry test. Since then my spirometry has remained stable and the results above are about the same as I had at diagnosis (in fact, a little better).
My confusion is that one Dr told me I don’t have COPD, one told me I have significant COPD and another said I’m borderline. From looking into it, I understand I have unusually high FVC and normal FVC1 but I do obviously have obstruction as my ratio is 0.67, FEF 25-75 is very low and the shape of the curve is ‘saggy’. One Dr eventold me this is a normal variant called dysanapsis as a result of being born prematurely. I’m not sure that’s true with the low FEF 25-65.
I have no idea what to make of it all really but am pleased my lung function is stable. My worry is being diagnosed with obstruction so young (I was 39 and it was likely present before then). I’m told that, although slow, COPD is still progressive despite quitting smoking and that gives it a long time to progress. I do what I can and keep very fit and eat well etc.
Thanks for reading this far and any thoughts are welcome.
