I am thinking about the table full of food that many of us will be gathering around on Thanksgiving this Thursday. I know the tendency may be to try a little (or a lot) of the holiday foods, but that may not be the best thing for your health.
I recall my days as a hospital RT. In the days following a major holiday, we would frequently have people come into the emergency room complaining of shortness of breath. Usually, they had overdone it and eaten too much, or consumed too much salt and were retaining fluid.
It is possible to trigger problems with congestive heart failure (CHF), diabetes, or other conditions if you are not careful about your food choices. You can cause more work of breathing if you eat too much, which causes your stomach to press into your diaphragm, or if you eat too many starchy or sweet carbohydrates. We can discuss this more in the comments section if you like.
What do you do to make sure you stay healthy and well when it comes to your nutrition around the holidays? Have you ever had to go to the ER after a holiday like the patients I referred to above?
