Hello Foundation friends! Did you know that the COPDF has a variety of helpful, accurate information on inhalers and nebulizers? I’m going to highlight just a few of these here.
The Foundation maintains an ever-evolving library of inhaler and nebulizer videos. These have been filmed by COPD Foundation respiratory therapists. Each inhaler video walks you through how to prepare and use that specific type of inhaler. We also have 12 nebulizer videos! These are in sets of two for breath actuated, jet, Lonhala® Magnair®, mesh, smart, and ultrasonic nebulizers. One video for each is dedicated to prep and use of that kind of nebulizer; there is also a complementary video for each that shows you how to clean and store a nebulizer of that type.
We encourage you to review the videos made for your inhalers and nebulizers, even if you think you are using them perfectly! It’s also a great idea to show your doctor or other health care provider (don’t forget your pharmacist) how you are using your devices so they can provide you feedback on your technique.
If you prefer to get your education and news through written materials, we have other great resources to help. Take a look at our Basics of COPD booklet, updated in 2021. Pages 15-20 give you an overview of the types of medications most often prescribed for people with COPD. This book covers types of medications, such as short- and long-acting medications, corticosteroids, and antibiotics. This booklet also includes information about how these medications are delivered – think different types of inhalers and nebulizers. This is a great starting place for someone new to COPD.
For more detail, visit our webpage devoted to treatments and medications for COPD. This will take you on a deeper dive into the different types of medications and what they are used for. You’ll learn benefits and considerations for both nebulizers and inhalers. And you’ll dip your toes into information about “non-pharmacological” treatments such as oxygen, pulmonary rehabilitation, and certain medical procedures. We hope you’ll join us and learn more through these resources!
