I love talking about pulmonary rehab. As a respiratory therapist, it is where I really fell in love with the field. I found a passion for teaching those with COPD and other lung problems. Pulmonary rehabilitation (rehab for short) offers so many benefits. In honor of National Pulmonary Rehab week, I am going to give you my top 3 reasons why YOU should consider going to pulmonary rehab.
1. You Build Strength and Stamina – What could be better than having a “total pro” (usually a respiratory or physical therapist) work with you to start an exercise routine that will work for you? These highly trained experts will use their knowledge of your lung condition, past health history, and current level of fitness to put together a great plan for you to start improving your strength and stamina. These exercises do not create bodybuilders but allow you to feel strong enough to do everyday tasks will less breathlessness.
2. You Build Confidence – Many people who get referred to pulmonary rehab are breathless when they move around. They find themselves doing less and less to avoid being short of breath. When you participate in a rehab program, you will be monitored while you exercise. Each time you attend a visit, you will be able to do more and more exercise on your own. This helps you learn how to pace yourself while doing things outside of rehab. You will also get more confident that you CAN do the activities you like. It will also show you how long it takes for you to recover every time you rest. Knowledge is power!
3. You Build Friendships – Your muscles and energy levels won’t be the only things that will grow in pulmonary rehab. You will get to know others living with similar breathing problems. There is a lot to be said about getting to know other people that have similar good days and bad days. These friendships will offer you help and support as you continue on your lung health journey. Often, there are local support groups associated with the rehab center that can be a real benefit to those with lung conditions.
I could write a list of 50 more reasons why pulmonary rehab is fantastic. To learn more about pulmonary rehab, watch this video. If you get short of breath with activity, ask your doctor if pulmonary rehab would be right for you. You can benefit from participating right away, even if you are newly diagnosed! It is a great way to learn more about your lung condition, increase your fitness, and find support.
