I have been on a daily, cardio exercise program for the past 4 years. I primarily use a recumbent exercise bike on a repeating pyramid program at 12 MPH and a Treadmill at 1.5 to 3 MPH.
The TM has always been more difficult for me as I have to move all of my weight with each step as opposed to sitting down and pedaling the bike, so in the interest of maximizing my workout I do 40 to 45 minutes on the TM and 15 to 20 minutes on the bike. It seems to me that the TM is better also because walking is what I do and what I want to continue to do.
Someone told me that increases in elevation on the TM result in greater work than do equal increases in speed and that I may want to push forward by increasing elevation. This makes sense to me because in my daily life I can walk flat ground with little difficulty but struggle on incline grades. Therefore my recent efforts have been to increase the elevation in increments rather than trying to increase the speed.
My question is simply does all of this make sense and what experience have you that exercise regularly had along these lines.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
