One day last week, Kristen Willard and I were talking about the importance of self-care. She brought up a term I had only learned about pretty recently – hygge, which is pronounced as hoo-geh.
If you aren’t familiar with the term, hygge comes from Scandinavia and represents a way of simplifying and beautifying the space you live in. My understanding is that this practice is something done all year, but may be especially needed during the long, cold days of winter.
In your mind’s eye, what kind of space would be one that promotes rest, comfort, and healing? To me, it looks a lot like this photo with soft light from candles, a book, a cup of tea, and a cozy blanket. I spent a little time trying to make my reading area look a little more restful and calming. And you know, I very much enjoyed being in that space and felt quite a bit relaxed after spending some time there.
That got me thinking about sharing this concept with you, my friends. Do you think creating a space that feels like a warm hug could be beneficial to you? When I worked on my space, I just used some battery-operated candles I had on hand, made some decaf hot cocoa, and the curled up with the softest blanket I could find. It didn’t cost me a dime, but it was beautiful!
What do you say? Think you might try it? Or do you have other tips for keeping your spirits up during the winter months?
