Pulmonary Rehabilitation as a Mechanism to Reduce Hospitalizations for Acute Exacerbations of COPD

This meta-analysis of 18 studies (10 randomized controlled trials) examined the relationship between pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) and both ED visits and hospitalizations. In overall analyses, PR graduates fared better than their non-PR counterparts. When the results were isolated by type of study, the results were less clear.

In the RCTs, COPD patients who completed PR experienced significantly fewer hospitalizations than did those who did not complete PR; this finding held in the before and after studies (comparing outcomes in the year prior to and following PR) and two of three cohort studies. The authors suggest that the lack of consistency across all findings may be attributable to characteristics of the patients or PR programs themselves.
