Position Statement: COPD is the Third Leading Cause of Death in the United States

Prior to 2008, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) lists Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease (CLRD) as the fourth leading cause of death in America with a projection that it would become the third leading cause of death by 2020. On December 9th, 2010, the CDC announced that CLRD (which is mostly comprised of COPD) has become the third leading cause of death in the United States. This announcement came 12 years earlier than predicted. The rationale for this change is explained in the Position Statement: COPD is the third leading cause of death in the Unites States.
